Though making a traditional bowl of Matcha can look a bit intimidating, the process is quite simple. Gather the accessories and follow the steps below to create the perfect frothy cup of Matcha green tea.
Place 2 bamboo scoops (approx. 1/2 tsp) of Matcha into a small hand sifter over a bowl.
Sift the Matcha into the bowl to avoid clumps from naturally forming in the tea. Though sifting is optional, it is strongly recommended.
Add 2-3 oz (less than 1/3 of the bowl) of pre-boiling water (180°F / 80°C) to the bowl.
Using the bamboo whisk, whisk the tea briskly in an "M" or "W" motion.
Gently rub the surface with the bamboo whisk to rid the froth of any large air bubbles.
Add up to 6 oz of hot water to the bowl.
Enjoy!
Boiling water should be avoided to preserve the smooth, mild taste of Matcha. The temperature will release the tannins in the tea, resulting in a bitter taste.
Clean the accessories by rinsing with water only. If possible, store the bamboo whisk on a whisk holder, which helps preserve the shape of the whisk and prevents molding.
